Artist, illustrator & graphic novel creator
Raphael Atkins is an artist, illustrator and graphic novel creator based in Meanjin, Brisbane.
A prolific and precocious talent, Raphael’s earliest years were spent doodling super heroes for his pre-school mates in exchange for their Tiny Teddies.
At primary school, his stories and illustrations caught the attention of award-winning author Tristan Bancks and the publishers at Penguin/Random House, who would go on to publish Raphael’s story ‘Morris’ in Bancks’s ‘My Life’ series.
Then at the tender age of 15, Raphael was invited to join the team at Cumulus Visual Effects, where he escaped school to work as a VFX artist on feature films and television for the next three years.
Today, aged 23 Raphael still enjoys the flexibility of working in a digital medium, and continues to draw from his love of film and television to create comedy drama graphic novels. His work infuses cinematic storytelling with the weird and wonderful energy accessible through illustration.
